Section 8 is a federal assistance program that helps individuals and families afford safe, decent housing in the private market. Instead of public housing, vouchers cover a portion of rent in eligible homes or apartments.
Key Benefits:
- Affordable Rent: Pays up to 70% of your monthly rent directly to the landlord
- Choose Where You Live: Use the voucher with any property that accepts Section 8
- Safe Housing Standards: All participating units must meet HUD’s quality inspections
- Flexible for Families: Supports families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities
- Income-Based: Rent is based on what you can afford (usually 30% of your income)
- Portability: In many cases, you can transfer your voucher if you move to another area
Millions of Americans qualify for housing assistance but haven’t claimed it. Find out if you’re one of them — it’s fast, free, and you could save hundreds on rent
Looking for Rent Assistance
The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the program’s requirements and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects.
A family issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit of its choice where the owner agrees to rent under the program. This unit may include the family’s present residence. Rental units must meet minimum health and safety standards, as determined by the PHA.
